It’s honey that is infused with hot peppers, creating a delicious combination of sweet and spicy flavors. It can be made with fresh or dried chili peppers, hot sauce or crushed red pepper flakes.

How to use spicy honey sauce in recipes

This sauce adds a sweet & spicy flavor to a variety of foods. You can use it as a substitute in a recipe that calls for both a sweetener—honey, sugar, maple syrup—and chili peppers. Or when you want to turn a sweet recipe a little spicy.

Try it in one of these recipes:

  • Baked Goods – honey cake, cookies, vegetable patties, breads
  • Combine with a Condiment – mustard, ketchup, BBQ sauce
  • Stir into Drinks – tea, lemonades, cocktails
  • Drizzle over toast, sweet or savory tarts, pizza, dessert
  • Mix into Sauce, Marinades & Dressing – use to flavor chicken, meat, fish, roasted vegetables or salad

Ingredients

You only need a handful of ingredients to mix up a batch of this flavored honey. All of which are easily found in American supermarkets. Plus, they’ll last for a while in either your pantry or refrigerator.

  • Honey – I used a wildflower honey which has a mild sweetness. The color, flavor and aroma of honey differs, depending on the nectar of flowers (that the bees visit when they make it), their location and weather conditions. Honey made from a single source, called “varietal” honey, with strong flavors may not be necessary here. Overview of Honey Varietals
  • Chili Garlic Sauce – Find this in the ethnic foods aisle of the supermarket. It’s delicious on so many things, like spicy mayo sushi sauce & even sandwiches. **Due to a shortage of chili peppers this ingredient may not be available. You can make your own or substitute with a different kind of chili sauce.**
  • Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
  • Sriracha – or use your favorite brand of hot sauce

How to make hot honey sauce

Making your own hot honey is easy.

Simply add all of the ingredients into a small sauce pan. Stir together. Place on the stovetop & let it cook on a low heat for about 30 minutes.

Keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t get too hot. If the mixture bubbles too rapidly the honey will become thick & take on a burnt flavor.

If desired, pass the honey through a fine mesh strainer to remove the pepper flakes from the hot honey. If you leave them in, you’ll have to stir to distribute them before use. Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature.

How do you store hot honey?

Once cool, transfer to a glass container with a lid. Store at room temperature.

Can you adjust the heat?

Sure, modify the amount of the red pepper flakes, sriracha and chili garlic sauce to fit your spicy foods comfort level. If you already made the hot honey recipe and want a more mild level of heat, mix with additional honey to dilute the flavor.
