Kiwi Fruit: Gold vs. Green

The first noticeable difference between these two kiwis is in their skin. Unlike the brown & fuzzy nature of the green kiwi, the golden variety has a smooth bronze skin. Inside it has a golden-yellow colored flesh that is sweeter and more aromatic in flavor.

Both kiwis can be enjoyed fresh, skin and all. They can also be processed into foods like drinks, purees and candies. The flavor and color in green kiwi can be destroyed during processing, making the golden variety a useful replacement in recipes.

Green & Gold Kiwi Nutrition

A serving size of kiwi fruit (2 medium, green/gold kiwi) provides approximately:

  • 100 Calories
  • 25 grams carbohydrate
  • 2 grams protein
  • ≤1 gram fat
  • 2-4 grams fiber

Kiwis are an excellent source of vitamin C. As well as a good sources of potassium, fiber, folate, and vitamin E. They contain unique phytonutrients and are full of antioxidants. The presence of the enzyme actinidin helps breakdown proteins. This can aid in digestion as well as be useful in  tenderizer meats during food preparation.

How to Select and Store Kiwifruit

At the time of purchase, check the firmness of the fruit. Like peaches and avocados, kiwis will give slightly to pressure when ripe.

Too firm:

Leave them out at room temperature to continue ripening. Speed up this process by placing kiwis in a paper bag along with apples or bananas. Whole kiwis will last a few days at room temperature.

Since gold kiwi fruit ripen from the inside out, they tend to taste tart closer to the skin when firm. Keep an extra eye on them as they ripen because you’ll want to use them as soon as the outside feels soft. They also have a shorter shelf life compared to the green kiwi.

Ready before you are:

Store kiwifruit in the refrigerator to slow down the ripening process.

Wait Even longer:

Have you seen a family size package at the supermarket and wondered “Can I freeze kiwi fruit”?

Yes you can. Transfer ripe kiwis to the freezer to make them last even longer. For best results, cut them in half or quarters first. Arrange them in a single layer on a baking tray. Freeze until solid before placing them in a sealed freezer safe container for up to 4-6 months.

Ready to try them:
